This large Kiawe Tree (Prosopis pallida) has stood over Kama'ole 1 Beach Park for possibly over a hundred years. These trees native to South America are said to have been imported and planted by the first missionaries to Hawai'i in the 1800's. Supposedly they were planted to make the "heathen" hawaiians wear shoes, the branches have long, hard thorns which they drop often.
